Photobiomodulation (PBM), sometimes referred to by its historical or marketing names listed below, is a non-thermal process that uses coherent (laser) or non-coherent (LED/super-luminous diode) light in the visible red and near-infrared spectrum—typically 600–1100 nm—to interact with cellular photoacceptors such as cytochrome c oxidase, opsins, and transient receptor potential ion channels.

Advances in laser technology have extended effective therapeutic wavelengths into the 900–1100 nm range. Light in this “second therapeutic window” (roughly 800–1100 nm) exhibits reduced scattering and lower absorption by melanin and hemoglobin compared with shorter wavelengths, allowing deeper penetration into muscle, tendon, nerve, joint, and bone tissue while still delivering energy to the mitochondria.¹⁻⁴
